The Confederation of African Football (CAF) made a controversial move three weeks ago by revoking the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting rights from Senegal, effectively awarding them to Morocco due to incidents during the final whistle in Rabat on January 18. This decision has been met with strong opposition from Senegal’s national team, the Lions of Teranga.
On Monday, the Senegalese Football Federation received the official notification along with the detailed reasoning behind the CAF’s decision. This step is crucial as it paves the way for Senegal to formally challenge the ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as reported by RMC.
CAS to deliver a swift verdict on the can 2025 dispute
The CAF President has already indicated that the final judgment will be left to the CAS. While the tribunal has not disclosed its deliberation timeline, an expedited ruling is expected within weeks. This urgency stems from the fact that once pronounced, the decision will be binding, leaving no room for further appeals from either party—Senegal or Morocco.
«The CAS is fully equipped to resolve such disputes with the support of specialized and independent arbitrators,» stated Me Matthieu Reeb, CAS’s General Director, as quoted by the aforementioned radio station. We understand the urgency for both teams and fans to receive a final decision, and we are committed to ensuring the arbitration process is completed as swiftly as possible while upholding the right to a fair trial for all involved.»
