unicef calls for global engagement
Following a two-week mission to the area, Ted Chaiban, UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, emphasized that the crisis remains largely overlooked internationally. He stressed the necessity for increased global attention and support.
Chaiban observed a region where the population demonstrates remarkable resilience, yet continues to suffer from the enduring consequences of pervasive insecurity, unpredictable climate shifts, and deep-seated socio-economic challenges.
displacement, violence, and school closures: a dire reality
Data presented by UNICEF indicates that over 3.6 million individuals have been forced to leave their homes due to ongoing violence. The United Nations has also recorded more than 1,500 severe violations against children, including killings, kidnappings, and recruitment by armed groups.
The educational landscape is also significantly affected. By 2025, more than 8,400 schools were rendered inaccessible, denying countless children their right to learn and making them more susceptible to illnesses, psychological trauma, and extreme vulnerability.
