Chile-Morocco parliamentary group reiterates strong backing for UN Resolution 2797
For Chile, Morocco serves as a crucial gateway to the African continent. Both nations also share significant potential for economic synergy, particularly within the agricultural sector.
María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, who chairs the parliamentary friendship group between Chile and Morocco, reaffirmed the group’s unwavering commitment to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara. Her statement came during discussions held in Rabat on Tuesday.
Speaking to the press following her meeting with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic highlighted that this pivotal resolution formally recognizes the autonomy plan as a “serious and enduring solution” to the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
She further noted that the friendship group, which encompasses members from diverse political factions, stands in full solidarity with the principles enshrined in Resolution 2797.
Beyond diplomatic alignment, the Chilean delegation underscored the substantial potential for economic collaboration between the two nations, particularly within the agricultural sector. Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized the critical role of Moroccan fertilizers for Chile’s agriculture. Conversely, she pointed out Chile’s importance as an exporter of strategic minerals, such as copper and lithium, which are indispensable for Morocco’s rapidly expanding automotive industry.
The delegation also stressed its country’s keen interest in forging strategic partnerships with the Kingdom across various other vital sectors, including seawater desalination, advanced technology, and tourism.
Reflecting on the historical bond, Ms. Del Real Mihovilovic pointed out that the Chilean parliamentary delegation’s visit to Morocco coincided with two significant milestones: the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Chile and Morocco, and the 22nd anniversary of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s historic visit to Chile. She concluded by affirming that Chile’s foreign policy is a consistent “state policy,” ensuring that its friendship with Morocco transcends any specific political affiliations.
