Journalist and television channel director Aïssatou Diop Fall now faces significant legal consequences after remarks she made against Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, triggered national debate.
Aïssatou Diop Fall has been summoned by the Division spéciale de cybersécurité (DSC), Senegal’s cybersecurity unit, following a public video where she expressed a wish for Sonko to be abducted by armed groups. The statement, disseminated widely on social media, sparked immediate outrage and prompted the prosecutor’s office to intervene.
Public apology fails to stem legal action
In response to the backlash, Aïssatou Diop Fall issued a public apology via another video statement. Despite her attempt to clarify and retract her remarks, the prosecutor’s office, led by Ibrahima Ndoye, ordered her appearance before the cybersecurity unit for formal questioning. Under Senegalese law, such public statements—especially those disseminated online—can be prosecuted under multiple legal frameworks, including the Penal Code and the Cybercrime Act.
The potential charges include incitement to violence, threats to public order, or indirect calls for harm against an individual. Even without any direct act of violence, the mere dissemination of content deemed inflammatory or dangerous online can lead to prosecution. The DSC and the prosecutor’s office will now evaluate the content of her remarks to determine the appropriate legal response.
Legal risks and potential penalties
The outcome of this case remains uncertain, but the legal framework allows for severe penalties. Depending on how the prosecutor classifies her statements, Aïssatou Diop Fall could face fines or, in more serious cases, imprisonment of several years. The final decision will hinge on the findings of the DSC investigation and the prosecutor’s assessment of intent and public impact.
