Côte d’ivoire enhances blue economy cooperation with mauritius and seychelles

Abidjan, 22 juin 2026 – Côte d’Ivoire has significantly advanced its South-South cooperation efforts in the vital blue economy sector. This strategic move follows a productive working mission undertaken from June 10 to 12, 2026, to Mauritius and Seychelles by Sidi Tiémoko Touré, the Ivorian Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources.

The comprehensive tour was a crucial step in implementing Côte d’Ivoire’s national blue economy strategy. This strategy is viewed as a fundamental catalyst for sustainable economic growth, creating new employment opportunities, and maximizing the value of the nation’s rich marine and fisheries resources.

During the initial leg of the mission in Mauritius, the Ivorian minister engaged in substantive discussions with his Mauritian counterpart, Arvin Boolell Gosk, who oversees Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, and Fisheries. Their talks centered on bolstering collaboration across key areas, including fishing practices, aquaculture development, and the sustainable management of shared marine resources.

Mauritian officials expressed their full readiness to support Côte d’Ivoire in cultivating its blue economy. This commitment includes sharing invaluable expertise, facilitating specialized training programs, and exploring joint project initiatives. Both nations are actively working towards finalizing a memorandum of understanding to formally structure and deepen their partnership.

In Seychelles, the Ivorian delegation delved into detailed discussions concerning the governance frameworks of the blue economy with local authorities. This included high-level meetings with Prime Minister Wallace Cosgrow, who also oversees the sector, alongside various technical experts and officials.

The dialogue focused on critical issues such as the sustainable management of fisheries resources, effective strategies to combat illegal fishing, the modernization of industry sectors, and the robust development of value chains. The mission also provided valuable opportunities for site visits to key port infrastructures in Victoria, Providence, and Cascade, as well as an advanced hatchery and the renowned Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI) at the University of Seychelles.

Concluding this insightful journey, several pivotal areas for future cooperation were identified. These encompass blue economy governance, advancements in aquaculture, collaborative scientific research, fostering innovation, and strengthening efforts against illicit fishing activities. Formal protocols of agreement are anticipated to be signed soon, solidifying these partnerships.

Through this significant mission, Côte d’Ivoire unequivocally reaffirms its commitment to drawing inspiration from successful African models. The nation aims to fortify its national blue economy development strategy and champion South-South cooperation, emphasizing the reciprocal sharing of expertise and a collective pursuit of sustainable development.
