Dakar court considers complaint against Ousmane Sonko over Touba remarks

A collective representing descendants of Serigne Touba has filed a formal complaint against Ousmane Sonko following controversial remarks he made about illicit funds allegedly entering the holy city of Touba.
The group, known as the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touka, has submitted a legal complaint against Ousmane Sonko at the Dakar High Court this Wednesday. Registered under case number 12562, the complaint stems from statements attributed to the PASTEF leader during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters last weekend. Sonko reportedly claimed that “dirty money” had found its way into Touba, a claim that has sparked widespread controversy.
The collective, represented by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, argues that these remarks have tarnished the reputation and dignity of Touba, a city built on principles of faith, integrity, and justice by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. They insist that Sonko’s statements cast an unfounded shadow over the moral and spiritual standing of the holy city.
The complainants are urging the prosecutor to launch a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of Sonko’s claims and assess any potential legal consequences. Their demands include summoning Sonko to clarify his statements and provide evidence supporting his allegations. If the inquiry confirms wrongdoing, they seek legal action for defamation or spreading false information under Senegalese law.
