First senegalese football fans return to Dakar after can detention in Morocco

The initial group of three Senegalese football supporters, previously held in Morocco following disturbances during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), touched down at Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) in Diass this Thursday. Abdoulaye Dieng, Ibrahima Diop, and Aziz Wade disembarked from a Royal Air Maroc flight at 6:25 PM, where they were met with an enthusiastic reception from a considerable crowd.

These three individuals were part of a larger contingent of 18 supporters apprehended during the CAN final match between Senegal and Morocco. The Rabat Court of Appeal had convicted them on charges of “hooliganism,” which included allegations of public order offenses, throwing projectiles, damaging sports facilities, and assaulting law enforcement personnel.

Having completed their three-month prison sentences, the trio gained their freedom on April 18. For the remaining 15 supporters, their appellate sentences range from six months to one year of incarceration. Their eventual repatriation to Senegal will occur progressively as each of their respective terms of imprisonment concludes.
