French engineer detained in Senegal over homosexuality charges

French national held in Senegal since February over homosexuality allegations

A French engineer in his early thirties has been held in detention in Senegal since February 14, facing serious charges that include ‘unnatural acts’ and ‘attempted transmission of HIV’. The case comes amid a recent tightening of laws against same-sex relationships in the West African nation.

Recent legal changes heighten risks for LGBTQ+ individuals

In early March, Senegal enacted a new law increasing penalties for same-sex relationships to five to ten years in prison. This legislation, signed into law by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on March 31, reflects a broader climate of intolerance toward LGBTQ+ rights in the country, where homosexuality remains widely stigmatized.

The detained engineer, who resides in Dakar, was arrested as part of a broader crackdown on alleged homosexual activity. Authorities have charged him with multiple offenses, including ‘unnatural acts,’ conspiracy to commit a crime, money laundering, and attempted HIV transmission.

Consular support and diplomatic response

France’s diplomatic mission in Dakar has been closely monitoring the situation. Consular officials have conducted four visits to ensure the detainee’s well-being, maintaining close contact with both the individual and his family. The French Foreign Ministry in Paris has also remained engaged, reiterating its commitment to universal human rights.

The French government has emphasized its stance on LGBTQ+ rights, advocating for the decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide and condemning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Escalating homophobia and legal consequences

Senegal’s new legislation follows a surge in homophobic incidents and arrests tied to perceived same-sex relationships. While public sentiment remains largely conservative, authorities have framed the crackdown as a fulfillment of political promises aimed at appealing to traditional values.

Human rights advocates warn that such measures could further marginalize LGBTQ+ individuals, pushing them into secrecy and increasing their vulnerability to abuse and persecution.
