Disciplinary ruling on Nantes-Toulouse match: “no sporting stakes at play,” says LFP official

Sébastien Deneux, chair of the French Football League’s disciplinary committee, explains the decision to uphold the 0-0 draw in the Nantes-Toulouse match, which was abandoned on May 17 following pitch invasions by Nantes fans. Toulouse FC has voiced strong objections to the ruling.
The final Ligue 1 fixture between Nantes and Toulouse on May 17 was cut short when Nantes supporters stormed the pitch in the 22nd minute. Toulouse FC quickly expressed dissatisfaction with the disciplinary committee’s decision to validate the 0-0 score, hinting at a potential appeal. The club argued in a statement: “We regret that the match could not conclude under normal conditions and question what concrete actions the club could have taken to ensure its completion. We remain vigilant about the potential for future misuse of such a decision.” Toulouse FC’s frustration suggests they would have preferred a 3-0 forfeit victory.
“The decision to uphold the score, given that Nantes and its fans caused the interruption, raises significant questions… First, this option was added to the regulations just two years ago. Previously, the only outcomes for abandoned matches were a loss for the offending side or a replay—both starting from 0-0. More importantly, this case had a unique characteristic: at the moment of abandonment, there were no sporting stakes involved for either team. Nantes was already relegated, and Toulouse’s fate was sealed regardless of the result—Toulouse would finish ninth with either a draw or a win, securing 45 or 47 points respectively. In purely sporting terms, the decision to award a loss or uphold the score had identical consequences.
“Under no circumstances will clubs or supporters be allowed to manipulate match outcomes through misconduct.”
Why was this decision made instead of awarding Toulouse a loss? The disciplinary committee’s expanded options aim to separate sporting outcomes from disciplinary sanctions, preventing teams from capitalizing on opponent misconduct for an unfair advantage. In this instance, upholding the score was chosen because it’s unclear why Toulouse would have been granted a forfeit victory in a match that was abandoned at 0-0…
Do you fear this decision could set a dangerous precedent?
Not at all. Precisely because this ruling hinges on the absence of sporting impact. In any other scenario, without engaging in speculative discipline, a different decision would likely have been made. Clubs and supporters must never be permitted to influence match outcomes through deliberate abandonment. We will remain unwavering in our vigilance against such behavior.”
