Gabon and European Union strengthen ties through strategic dialogue

Gabon and European Union forge new path in strategic partnership

The 2026 session of the strategic partnership dialogue between Gabon and the European Union opened this Monday at the Palais des Congrès Omar Bongo Ondimba. Led by Hermann Immongault, Vice-president of the Government, and Cécile Abadie, the European Union Ambassador to Gabon, this meeting signals a decisive turn in bilateral relations. Coming two years after the 2024 talks and following the establishment of the Fifth Republic after the April 2025 elections, Libreville aims to solidify its institutional framework through a model of sustainable co-investment.

Discussions between European Union ambassadors and government officials covered a broad spectrum, including political reforms, economic growth, governance, and environmental protection, alongside regional security. During his address, Hermann Immongault confirmed that the country has moved past its transition phase. He emphasized that the focus is now on building the Fifth Republic, shifting from a traditional aid-based relationship to a structured economic partnership. This new approach prioritizes local value creation, skill transfers, and human capital development, with the Samoa Agreement serving as the primary framework.

Focusing on investment and the green transition

The Vice-president highlighted that protecting Gabon‘s natural heritage is a global responsibility. He argued that preserving these resources requires international recognition and more equitable financial mechanisms to support the ecological transition. This strategy aims to balance industrialization with environmental conservation. Furthermore, Gabon reaffirmed its dedication to multilateralism and maintaining stability within Central Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.

Ambassador Cécile Abadie praised the depth of the ongoing dialogue, noting the necessity of modernizing cooperation tools to meet shared priorities. She expressed the European Union‘s commitment to supporting Gabon through a more balanced partnership. This collaboration is designed to yield tangible results in investment and reform, benefiting both parties through open and transparent exchange.
