Gabon ends its fisheries partnership with the European Union

Gabon has officially decided to let its fisheries partnership with the European Union (EU) expire, with the formal end of the agreement occurring on June 28, 2026.

This move represents a calculated shift by the national leadership to reassert authority over the country’s marine wealth and ensure that the domestic economy reaps greater rewards from its natural resources.

A question of fair value

The core issue for officials in Libreville is the meager financial return from the existing arrangement. Currently, the deal brings in roughly 2.6 million euros annually (about 1.7 billion FCFA). When compared to the actual market value of the fish harvested within Gabonese maritime zones, these figures are seen as entirely inadequate.

Moving forward, the government is prioritizing the domestic processing of tuna. By shifting focus toward local industry, the aim is to stimulate job growth, attract industrial capital, and keep more of the value chain within the borders of Gabon.

Seeking a balanced partnership

This policy change is a pillar of a broader vision for economic independence and the expansion of the blue economy. While the door to future dialogue with Brussels hasn’t been permanently shut, the message from Gabon is unmistakable: any future collaboration must be fairer and significantly more lucrative for the nation.
