Gouvernement Senegal sonko fears justice minister appointment

Senegal’s new government: why Ousmane Sonko is wary of Justice Minister Moussa Sarr

Justice Minister Moussa Sarr appointment sparks concerns in Senegal

Senegal’s political landscape is already buzzing with reactions to the newly formed government. At the center of the debate is Justice Minister Moussa Sarr, whose appointment has raised immediate concerns within the Pastef party led by Ousmane Sonko. Critics question whether his legal background aligns with the party’s expectations.

The appointment of Moussa Sarr as Senegal’s new Justice Minister has triggered swift reactions from Pastef. Ousmane Sonko, the party’s leader, has publicly voiced his reservations, particularly regarding the new minister’s alleged involvement in contentious legal cases that have strained relations between Pastef and the judiciary.

Sonko’s skepticism centers on Sarr’s previous roles in legal proceedings that have drawn criticism. The Pastef leader emphasized that the selection of Sarr does little to instill confidence within his party, given the minister’s history in these matters.

« The choices made for the Justice Ministry do not reassure us, » Sonko stated. « He has been a central figure in legal cases that have shaped our relationship with certain courts. » While Sonko has chosen to withhold a final judgment, his party’s doubts remain evident, with plans to monitor the minister’s actions closely.

« We have our concerns, but we will assess the situation based on the minister’s actions, » Sonko added. « And we will take appropriate steps in the National Assembly if necessary. »

Prime Minister Al Amine Lô under scrutiny

Beyond Moussa Sarr, Ousmane Sonko also directed criticism at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. Described as a technocrat at the time of his appointment, Lô is now accused by Sonko of straying from his non-political mandate. The Pastef leader urged the prime minister to refocus on governance rather than political maneuvering.

« I call on the Prime Minister to remain a technocrat, » Sonko declared. « He must step back from political games. Having been chosen for his technical expertise, he should stick to that role. »

Sonko went further, hinting at insider knowledge of the prime minister’s activities. « I am aware of many things regarding his actions, » he warned. « Out of courtesy, I have been patient, but he should not provoke me. »

Pastef officials face internal backlash

The criticism did not stop at government members. Sonko also called out several Pastef officials who joined the new administration despite the party’s directives. Among those singled out were Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. The party leader accused them of accepting positions without consulting the movement’s leadership.

« Those who have taken seats in the government did so on their own, » Sonko stated. « When the time comes, we will address their cases. »

These remarks signal the first signs of political tension surrounding the new government. However, the appointment of Moussa Sarr as Justice Minister remains the primary source of concern for Sonko, who insists on evaluating the minister’s performance before drawing final conclusions.
