DR Congo: Médecins Sans Frontières urges Global Fund to prioritize North Kivu in malaria fight

With funding cuts looming, Médecins Sans Frontières warns that North Kivu’s already fragile healthcare system could collapse further. The region has faced years of humanitarian crises and supply shortages that now threaten critical malaria treatment programs.
Stéphane Doyon, MSF’s Program Manager in France, shared his concerns in a recent interview, highlighting the potential consequences of excluding North Kivu from the Global Fund’s malaria initiatives.
« Our biggest worry is that if North Kivu is removed from the Global Fund’s project, most treatments currently reaching health centers—outside of MSF-supported facilities—would stop. MSF simply cannot fill this gap for an entire province. The situation would become extremely dire. »
« Malaria remains the leading cause of consultations in our health centers. For us, the priority is clear: North Kivu must regain its place as a top priority in malaria support. This province is one of the most critical in the country right now. We’re seeing measles and cholera outbreaks, and the population—already devastated by conflict—desperately needs sustained external assistance, » emphasized Stéphane Doyon.
