One of Paris Saint-Germain’s most emblematic defenders, Presnel Kimpembe, has opened up about the moment he realized his time at the club was drawing to a close. The turning point? The arrival of Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho in 2024, a player brought in to partner Marquinhos in the heart of PSG’s defense.
For Kimpembe, the signing of Pacho under Luis Enrique’s management was a clear signal. The young Ecuadorian, left-footed and physically imposing, was brought in to strengthen a defensive duo that had long relied on Kimpembe’s own left-footed presence. The message was unmistakable: the club was investing in the future, and the veteran defender’s role would evolve.
Despite the personal disappointment, Kimpembe’s journey at PSG reached a high note with the historic Champions League victory, a moment he describes as both fulfilling and bittersweet.
From heartbreak to triumph: the emotional aftermath
In a candid reflection, Kimpembe shared his mixed emotions following the Champions League triumph. « It wasn’t heartbreak, no. I had already reached my limit. I gave everything to succeed and meet my goals. The circumstances were tough, but that didn’t stop me from working hard, trying to return to my best form and timing. The whole story is wild—ending with a Champions League win. I would have preferred to leave as an active player on the pitch. But the best way to thank everyone was to walk away with this trophy », he admitted.
Frustration beneath the glory
Even in victory, Kimpembe acknowledged a lingering sense of frustration. « There was so much joy and happiness. But inside, there’s also this small part of frustration. I would have loved to be one of the key players on the field. I know I contributed to the team and the club, but without being on the pitch, it’s a different feeling », he reflected.
