Major drinking water network reconfiguration launched in Yaoundé

The first stone of a significant project to reconfigure the drinking water supply network in Yaoundé was officially laid this Thursday, June 25, 2026, in Minkoameyos. This initiative is designed to provide a sustainable solution for water access across the Cameroonian capital and its surrounding regions.

I witnessed the official groundbreaking ceremony for this strategic infrastructure project at the Yaoundé VII town hall esplanade in Minkoameyos. The event was led by the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, who was accompanied by the Director General of Camwater, Dr. Blaise Moussa, along with various government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, local leaders, and civil society representatives.

Commissioned under the directives of President Paul Biya, this essential project aims to drastically improve water distribution for the inhabitants of Yaoundé, Soa, Akak, Mfou, Bikok, and Mbankomo. It focuses particularly on those currently excluded from the network or those suffering from chronic supply disruptions.

The benefits of this overhaul extend beyond residential use. Key non-domestic subscribers, such as industrial plants, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, are also set to be primary beneficiaries of the improved infrastructure.

To ensure the project’s success, Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba called upon all involved parties to collaborate closely and maintain a high level of synergy during field operations. For his part, the Director General of Camwater affirmed that his organization is fully committed to supporting the project and resolving any technical or logistical obstacles. The ultimate goal remains meeting the rapidly expanding water needs of the populations in and around Yaoundé.
