Mali football coach tom saintfiet steps down amid crisis

Mali football team loses Tom Saintfiet as coach

Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian coach who led Mali’s national football team, has announced his immediate resignation. His departure comes as the West African nation faces escalating political tensions and security threats from jihadist and Tuareg rebel groups.

In a heartfelt statement posted on Facebook on April 27, 2026, Saintfiet expressed pride in his tenure, which began in August 2024. He highlighted the challenges posed by Mali’s unstable environment but emphasized his commitment to the team and the country.

“Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of Mali’s senior national team. Though the journey was demanding, I am proud of what we achieved together. Now is the time for me to pursue a new challenge.”

Tom Saintfiet’s legacy with the Mali national team

During his 17-match tenure, Saintfiet steered the team through a challenging World Cup qualification campaign. The Mali national team, nicknamed the Aigles (The Eagles), suffered just two defeats under his guidance—one of which was a narrow quarter-final loss to Senegal in the recent Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), ending 1-0.

Despite the setback, Saintfiet praised football’s unifying power in Mali, calling it a source of hope and peace for the nation. His departure leaves big shoes to fill, especially as the country navigates political instability and security concerns.

A transitional phase for Malian football

The Mali Football Federation (FMF) has acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and launched a search for his successor. FMF President Mahamadou Baba Cissé commended the coach’s dedication and expressed gratitude for his service.

The announcement follows rumors of Saintfiet’s potential move to Ghana, where he was previously linked before the appointment of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to the Black Stars’ bench. For now, the focus remains on stabilizing the team amid uncertain times.
