Mauritania and the european union deepen partnership dialogue

A high-level meeting for the partnership dialogue between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the European Union was convened on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Prime Minister’s Office. The session was presided over by His Excellency, Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould DIAYE.

Representing the European side were the Director for Africa from the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the Director for Africa from the Directorate-General for International Partnerships. They were accompanied by the resident Team Europe Ambassadors in Mauritania, representing Germany, Spain, France, and Italy, in addition to non-resident Ambassadors from Romania and Denmark.

This engagement, aimed at consolidating and enhancing the relationship between Mauritania and the European Union, served as a comprehensive review of topics of shared interest. The discussions encompassed bilateral relations, sub-regional issues, and international affairs, with a particular focus on security, migration, the humanitarian situation, economic growth, development, and the promotion of human, civil, and political rights. These regular political dialogues are a key mechanism for evaluating the state of cooperation and tracking socio-political and economic developments in the country and across the European landscape.

In their opening remarks, the Mauritanian delegation provided an overview of the political situation in Mauritania, emphasizing its stability in the lead-up to the forthcoming national dialogue. The conversations also covered matters of peace and security, especially in connection with the humanitarian effort of welcoming and supporting refugees in Mauritania. Furthermore, an update was provided on the nation’s economic status, highlighting recent successes, persistent challenges, and the structural reforms underway to foster sustainable and inclusive growth.

On behalf of Team Europe, Ms. Patricia Llombard-Cussac presented the European Union’s activities in Mauritania. Her presentation highlighted the implementation of the partnership within the Global Gateway initiative, with a special emphasis on developing infrastructure and the energy sector. Both parties also deliberated on human development priorities, such as strengthening social sectors like Health and Education and fostering local development. Finally, the dialogue included a broad overview of other sectoral policies, including migration, fisheries, and defense cooperation.

Conducted in an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding, the discussions were enriching for all participants, underscoring the cordial relationship between Team Europe and Mauritania.

At the meeting’s conclusion, both parties renewed their pledge to continue consultations through constructive dialogue to ensure a fruitful partnership.

  • The Minister of Economic Affairs and Development;
  • The Minister of Fisheries, Maritime and Port Infrastructures;
  • The Minister of Education and Reform of the Education System;
  • The Minister of Health;
  • The Director of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet.

Partnership dialogue meetings between the European Union and Mauritania are organized regularly under the terms of the Samoa Agreement between the countries of Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the European Union (OACPS-EU).
