Mohamed Maouloud assumes leadership of Mauritania’s opposition coalition amid a pivotal moment, following the historic turnout of tens of thousands at a mass rally in Nouakchott.
The road ahead for Mauritania’s opposition coalition
Mauritania stands at a crossroads, grappling with a series of formidable challenges that demand immediate attention. A stalled national dialogue process, rising ethnic rhetoric, and heightened security risks along the Malian border have compounded the struggles faced by citizens, including soaring living costs.
Maouloud, the newly elected chair of the Platform of the Mauritanian Opposition Coalitions (PCOD), has voiced deep concerns over the nation’s paralysis in finding inclusive solutions. «A national crisis persists due to the impasse in dialogue, where key issues remain unresolved because critical stakeholders are excluded from the process», he emphasized.
Breaking the deadlock in national dialogue
The stalled dialogue process tops Maouloud’s agenda. In a strong appeal to President Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, he urged decisive action to address attempts by the ruling majority to introduce constitutional amendments for a third presidential term—a move constitutionally prohibited and absent from the national agenda.
«The path to consensus is deliberately obstructed by the ruling coalition», Maouloud stated, underscoring the urgency of reviving inclusive discussions to resolve Mauritania’s most pressing issues.
Security and social pressures mount
The opposition leader painted a stark picture of Mauritania’s current state, highlighting two critical emergencies. First, the resurgence of divisive ethnic discourse, fueled by social media, threatens national unity. Second, the volatile security situation in eastern regions, exacerbated by the spillover of conflict from Mali, has triggered an influx of refugees and disrupted cross-border pastoral activities, further straining local livelihoods.
These interconnected challenges form the core of the PCOD’s priorities as it seeks to navigate Mauritania through this turbulent period.
