The jihadist group Boko Haram has abandoned several of its strongholds along the shores of Lake Chad following coordinated aerial and ground operations by Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, according to testimonies and a Nigerian security source.

aerial strikes target jihadist hideouts

The Chadian military launched strikes on remote islands within Lake Chad—a sprawling wetland straddling Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon—since Friday. Locals report militants fled islands such as Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar in small boats, taking families with them. Clashes also erupted on Kaukeri Island, a key Boko Haram stronghold in the region.

civilian casualties emerge from military campaign

The offensive inadvertently struck civilians, including Nigerian fishermen working on Boko Haram-controlled islands. Dozens are reported killed in the bombings, with graphic videos showing critically injured victims treated at a hospital in Bosso, Niger. In this area, fishermen often operate under jihadist pressure, forced to pay extortion taxes to Boko Haram to continue working.

regional response to recent attacks

These military actions follow deadly assaults on Chad’s military. Last week, Chad declared three days of national mourning after two generals were killed in an ambush. Days earlier, an attack on a Chadian military base along Lake Chad resulted in at least 24 soldier fatalities. A Nigerian intelligence source confirms the airstrikes were coordinated among Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, each deploying two fighter jets.

ongoing insurgency fuels regional instability

The decade-long jihadist insurgency led by Boko Haram and its rival, Islamic State West Africa Province, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions across the Lake Chad basin. With violence spreading to neighboring countries, regional states have reactivated the Multinational Joint Task Force to intensify efforts against armed jihadist factions.
