In a significant step toward modernizing national infrastructure, Morocco and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have formalized financing agreements worth 365 million euros. This capital injection is designed to bolster the safety and durability of the Kingdom’s extensive road and rail systems.
Strategic funding for rail and road networks
The first component of this financial package involves a 50 million euro loan from the EIB, complemented by a 15 million euro grant from the European Union. These funds are dedicated to the Office national des chemins de fer (ONCF) for a comprehensive railway rehabilitation project. The agreement was finalized in Rabat by Lionel Rapaille of EIB Global, Mohamed Smouni of ONCF, and Daniele Dotto from the EU delegation, with the participation of Economy and Finance Minister Nadia Fettah and EIB President Nadia Calviño.
A second, larger agreement was reached with Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM). This involves a 300 million euro EIB loan specifically targeted at enhancing the resilience of the national highway network. This investment aims to ensure that Morocco’s primary transit corridors remain robust and efficient under evolving conditions.
A half-century of cooperation
During the signing event, Nadia Calviño emphasized that Morocco remains a vital strategic partner for the EIB, describing the nation as a cornerstone of stability and economic growth in the region. Minister Nadia Fettah echoed these sentiments, highlighting the deep-rooted nature of this collaboration, which spans five decades of partnership and 20 years of a permanent EIB presence within the Kingdom.
This latest financial commitment supports the transition toward modern, sustainable mobility. By investing in these concrete projects, the partnership continues to deliver measurable improvements for citizens while advancing economic development and climate action goals. For nearly 50 years, the EIB has acted as a primary investment engine for the EU in Morocco, fostering social cohesion and infrastructure excellence.
