The anticipated hike is now official. In an early-morning press release, the government confirmed a fuel price adjustment effective immediately. Super gasoline now sells for 990 FCFA per liter—up 70 FCFA—while diesel has risen to 755 FCFA per liter, an increase of 75 FCFA.

This move comes as no surprise to those who followed the former prime minister’s statements. In May, before parliament, he cautioned that a price hike might become unavoidable.

« We will do everything possible to shield the population from the Middle East crisis, but when it becomes impossible, we will have to return to the people and say, ‘This is no longer sustainable—we must raise prices,’ » he declared.

The government justified the adjustment by stating it merely restores prices to their pre-December 2025 levels. Prices for other petroleum products, including cooking gas and boat fuel, remain unchanged.

The decision follows surging global oil prices driven by the Middle East conflict—a situation Senegal cannot ignore despite its efforts to protect consumers. While modest, this increase will ripple across the economy, as fuel costs heavily influence transport and consumer goods prices. Senegalese citizens, already grappling with high living costs, will face further adjustments.
