Morocco joins Mediterranean Union Parliamentary Assembly leadership
The Kingdom has been elected to the Assembly’s Bureau and entrusted with leading the Artificial Intelligence Commission, underscoring the growing confidence in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and its elevated role within this Euro-Mediterranean body.
A Moroccan parliamentary delegation participated in the 10th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital.
Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Representatives and head of the delegation, used the platform to amplify Morocco’s influence within PA-UfM structures.
Strategic leadership roles secured
During the meetings, the Assembly’s Bureau and expanded Bureau finalized the composition of the new PA-UfM Bureau for 2026–2030, including the allocation of permanent commission presidencies. Morocco’s election to the Bureau and its assignment to lead the Artificial Intelligence Commission reflect the trust placed in the Kingdom’s parliamentary diplomacy and its growing prominence in this Euro-Mediterranean institution.
Vision for a connected Mediterranean
Fassi Fihri, speaking on behalf of the Moroccan Parliament, emphasized that PA-UfM remains a vital forum for deepening dialogue and cooperation between parliaments on both sides of the Mediterranean. He highlighted how the Assembly’s thematic priorities—artificial intelligence, youth engagement, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect a collective awareness of a transformative era. This period goes beyond technological change, reshaping cultural values, influence mechanisms, and decision-making processes across the region.
He pointed out that under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is advancing a modernization drive that integrates digital transformation, economic diversification, and infrastructure development. These efforts position knowledge-based economy as a cornerstone of sustainable growth, enhanced competitiveness, and the strengthening of Morocco’s role as a trusted partner across the Mediterranean, Africa, and beyond.
Active participation in shaping regional priorities
The Moroccan delegation, composed of Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, engaged actively in sessions addressing key Mediterranean priorities: parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence governance, youth inclusion in decision-making, and collective security and development initiatives.
The closing session concluded with a renewed call for sustained parliamentary coordination among member states and a stronger PA-UfM role as a platform for dialogue and trust-building. The aim is to advance shared security, stability, sustainable development, and prosperity across the Mediterranean region.
