Morocco reaffirms Skhirat agreement as key to Libya peace at African Union

Morocco has once again placed the Skhirat agreement at the centre of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis, this time before the African Union’s Peace and Security Council. During a session dedicated to Libya on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, reiterated the kingdom’s support for national reconciliation and inter-Libyan dialogue.

Arrouchi stressed that the Skhirat agreement, signed on 17 December 2015 under UN auspices, remains a key framework for achieving a sustainable settlement. He also underscored the need to preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ambassador expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the African Union’s efforts to promote peace, security and stability across the continent, particularly those aimed at a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

He recalled the meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten, which led to the signing of an agreement on 7 January 2026 in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the government of eastern Libya.

Arrouchi highlighted Morocco’s role in facilitating the political process by bringing together the various Libyan factions. He said these initiatives respect international legality, the conclusions of the Skhirat agreement, and the understandings reached in Bouznika. The kingdom reiterated the importance of continuing political efforts and avoiding military options.
