The Minister of State for National Defense, General Salifou Mody, led this morning’s opening ceremony at the War College for Niger’s inaugural defense attaché training program. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of National Defense in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represents a significant shift in the country’s military diplomacy.

For decades, Niger lacked a structured framework to prepare defense and military attachés for their roles. This first-of-its-kind training program addresses that gap, aligning with the vision set by General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The program emphasizes balanced military partnerships rooted in national sovereignty while fostering a deeper understanding of defense cultures worldwide.

The Ministry of National Defense underscored the urgency of this training, citing the rapidly evolving security, diplomatic, and geopolitical landscape. Defense and military attachés play multifaceted roles: they serve as key envoys of national defense policies, facilitators of military cooperation, strategic analysts, cultural ambassadors, and crisis managers. In essence, they are guardians of Niger’s national interests.

« Military diplomacy is not just a tool of foreign policy—it is a cornerstone of international trust and operational capacity development, » General Salifou Mody stated. « This role demands more than military expertise; it requires diplomatic acumen, geopolitical awareness, and sharp analytical skills. » He urged participants to embody excellence, fostering relationships built on trust, promoting Niger’s strategic interests, and delivering insightful analyses to national leadership.

This inaugural training program marks a pivotal step in strengthening Niger’s military cooperation policies and reinforcing its global defense posture.
