Ousmane Sonko returns to the political forefront as president of Senegal’s National Assembly, securing unanimous support from Pastef party members despite his ongoing disagreements with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, also a member of the same party.

The new Assembly leader received a standing ovation from his party’s deputies, who now hold 130 of the 165 parliamentary seats. Sonko replaces El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned on Sunday.

Outside Sonko’s residence in the Keur Gorgui district, a Pastef-Les Patriotes party activist chants,
