Dakar — Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has sharply criticized the lack of judicial accountability for financial mismanagement and corruption cases in Senegal, demanding immediate action during a high-level interministerial meeting on infrastructure. His remarks, directed at Justice Minister Yassine Fall, underscored growing public frustration over unpunished financial scandals.
Sonko challenges impunity in public funds misuse
Speaking at the Conseil interministériel dedicated to infrastructure development, Sonko questioned the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to address financial irregularities. While Minister Fall presented updates on structural challenges within the justice system, Sonko seized the moment to voice his concerns:
« Madame la ministre, what exactly is justice doing? At times, I have my doubts. I wonder: is all this really necessary? »
He went further, accusing unnamed officials of operating with impunity: « In this country, you can do whatever you want and still be protected. The system remains unscathed, billions have been squandered, and not a single legal consequence has followed. »
Calls for transparent investigations and sanctions
Sonko emphasized the government’s mandate to hold corrupt actors accountable, stressing that Senegalese citizens should not bear the burden of refinancing projects while those responsible for mismanagement remain unpunished. « If things continue this way, it’s pointless. We cannot keep asking the people to make sacrifices to rebuild the same infrastructure while others pocket billions and roam freely, » he declared.
He also highlighted concerns about judicial integrity, questioning how the justice system could restore public trust if it fails to address corruption within its own ranks: « If the justice system itself is compromised, Madame la ministre, what are you doing with these cases? »
Minister Fall outlines commitment to justice reform
In response, Yassine Fall assured Sonko that her ministry is actively pursuing accountability, despite structural obstacles. « We are working tirelessly, and with divine will, we will deliver results that satisfy the Senegalese people, » she stated.
Sonko, however, remained unconvinced, insisting that renegotiations for new prison construction projects must not overshadow the urgency of identifying and penalizing those responsible for past misconduct. « Responsibility must be established, and sanctions must follow—whether for ministers or directors-general from past or current administrations, » he asserted.
The Prime Minister called for public disclosure of case updates, rejecting the idea that prosecutions belong solely to magistrates or government officials. « These cases belong to all Senegalese, » he declared, signaling potential escalation in his demands for transparency.
As tensions rise, Sonko’s rhetoric suggests a broader push to reform a justice system perceived as slow to act against financial crimes, a sentiment increasingly echoed by citizens.
