The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, made a strong commitment to youth employment and economic patriotism during a parliamentary session on May 22, 2026. Addressing lawmakers, he emphasized that job creation will be the cornerstone of the government’s economic and social agenda, responding to pressing societal demands.
« Employment is our absolute priority, and we will create thousands of jobs, » Sonko declared before the National Assembly. He outlined a strategy focused on revitalizing Senegal’s economic priorities, with a strong emphasis on empowering the national private sector and enhancing economic sovereignty.
While underscoring his determination, the Prime Minister acknowledged the need for economic realism. « I cannot guarantee employment for everyone, but we will create thousands of jobs for young people, » he clarified. This strategy will rely on collaboration between the state, private enterprises, and economic partners.
Sonko also highlighted the importance of economic patriotism, advocating for policies that prioritize national interests without excluding foreign investors. « We are aligning our policies to ensure a significant role for Senegalese citizens in productive sectors, » he stated. « This does not mean we will turn away foreign partners—we are organizing to secure a substantial share for our people. »
A key announcement during the session was the upcoming draft law on economic patriotism, aimed at encouraging local industrial and commercial activities while strengthening the country’s economic independence. The Prime Minister stressed that a well-structured private sector, supported by the government, will be essential for sustainable growth and reducing unemployment.
« A structured private sector must be backed by its government, » Sonko concluded, calling for collective mobilization to meet the long-term expectations of Senegal’s youth.
