On the sidelines of the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA) Executive Committee, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, welcomed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chairman of the Union’s Executive Committee, for a working meeting this past Thursday, June 4th.
The discussion centered on the missions, structure, and future prospects of the UPA, against a backdrop of mounting challenges facing the African continent. Ousmane Sonko outlined several proposals aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Union’s operations, with a strong emphasis on structural reform to amplify its influence on the continent’s political and institutional landscape.
In particular, he stressed the need for greater alignment between the UPA’s decisions and those of the African Union. He argued that such harmonization would foster cohesion and consistency in the actions of African institutions, ensuring a more unified and impactful approach to continental governance.
