Tchad’s flagship friendship park: a green milestone in N’Djamena

The grand inauguration of the Tchad-China Friendship Park was held yesterday, marking a significant milestone in environmental and urban development for N’Djamena. Under the high patronage of Prime Minister and Head of Government, Ambassador Allah Maye Halina, the event celebrated the completion of a project blending ecological innovation with diplomatic symbolism.

Developed by the Ministry of Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development through the National Agency of the Great Green Wall, the park embodies the country’s commitment to the Great Green Wall initiative. Its design integrates green infrastructure, renewable energy solutions, and sustainable water management to create a model urban oasis.

Speaking at the ceremony, N’Djamena’s Mayor, Senoussi Hassana Abdoulaye, highlighted the park’s deeper meaning: “This space is more than a recreational area—it stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between Tchad and China, a partnership rooted in shared vision and mutual trust.”

The Minister of Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, elaborated on the project’s dual ecological and social dimensions. He emphasized that the park is not merely an amenity but a living commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. “From awareness-raising to social cohesion, every element of this park reflects our goal of fostering greener, more inclusive, and sustainable urban environments.”

The Chinese Embassy in Tchad echoed this sentiment. Ambassador Wang Xining remarked that the park transcends infrastructure—it is a tangible symbol of the deep bonds uniting the two nations.

Closing the proceedings, Prime Minister Allah Maye Halina reiterated the strength of Tchad-China relations, stating: “This park is a new chapter in our cooperation, reinforcing the harmony, friendship, and solidarity that define our partnership with China.”

The park spans 12,460 square meters and features a blend of green spaces, renewable energy systems, and community amenities. Its integrated design includes landscaped areas and shaded zones that enhance the local microclimate, reduce heat islands, and promote biodiversity in an urban setting.

Energy independence is achieved through a 30-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system, complemented by a 50-kilowatt-hour intelligent energy storage unit. This setup powers the park’s lighting, administrative buildings, water pumping systems, and all operational services, ensuring full autonomy.

The water infrastructure includes a 92-meter-deep borehole with a flow rate of 20 cubic meters per hour, supported by a water tower, distribution network, and a community water point. This system not only sustains the park’s greenery but also provides a vital resource for nearby residents.

Among the park’s key features are a monument symbolizing Tchad-China friendship, a multi-purpose pavilion, a children’s play area, fitness zones, prayer spaces, administrative offices, a service kiosk, public restrooms, internal pathways, parking facilities, and a comprehensive solar-powered public lighting system.
