The political landscape in Sénégal has taken a sharp turn as tensions escalate between Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef-Les Patriotes party, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Just days after the Prime Minister’s reshuffle, efforts to integrate party officials into the new executive collapsed, leaving a widening rift between the two sides.
In an official statement released on June 1st by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page, Pastef-Les Patriotes declared that none of its officials would join the upcoming government. The announcement followed intense negotiations aimed at defining the terms of participation, but these talks ultimately failed to bridge the divide.
The party emphasized that its decision was made « in a spirit of responsibility » and aligned with its governing bodies’ directives. A lengthy meeting between Sonko and Faye on the morning of June 1st highlighted some areas of agreement, yet fundamental disagreements persisted over the role of the majority in shaping the executive power’s structure.
Enduring disputes over governance
After the discussions, the COMEX reviewed the situation and proposed new concessions to the President, but these were not accepted. Faced with this deadlock, the party opted to withdraw entirely from the government formation process. « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government, nor will it be represented by any minister », the statement clarified.
This bold move could significantly impact the country’s political balance, especially as Sénégalais voice growing concerns over economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, the party extended « full success to the new team », signaling its intent to continue its work from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as President. The coming days will reveal the full extent of this unfolding political chapter at the highest levels of Sénégal’s government.
