Paris and its surrounding Ile-de-France region witnessed jubilant celebrations following France’s 2-0 triumph over Morocco in the World Cup, remarkably free of widespread disturbances, with police reporting only a handful of arrests.

The French national team’s decisive 2-0 victory against Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals on Thursday sparked widespread euphoria across Paris and its immediate suburbs. Despite initial concerns, the night’s celebrations were largely joyous and peaceful, with authorities noting only minor, isolated incidents.

Ten individuals apprehended

While the mood was overwhelmingly celebratory, isolated instances of revelry did lead to some minor infractions. A few supporters ignited flares in the capital, and reports indicated sporadic firework mortar launches in nearby suburbs. By Friday morning, provisional figures from law enforcement confirmed ten individuals were apprehended across Paris and its periphery in connection with the post-match festivities. Charges included three arrests for phone theft in Paris, four for armed violence and unlawful assembly, also within Paris, and three for deploying fireworks in Seine-Saint-Denis. The status of these arrests, whether they resulted in formal custody, remains unconfirmed at this time.

Minor injury after a skirmish in the 7th arrondissement

In one notable incident, an electrical outage at the Grand Rex cinema in Paris forced the cancellation of a public match screening. Displaced fans subsequently gathered in surrounding bars, and upon the final whistle, briefly spilled onto the roadway, disrupting traffic. Police quickly intervened, guiding the crowd back to sidewalks without further trouble.

A more serious incident occurred near Quai Jacques Chirac in the 7th arrondissement, where a skirmish erupted between rival supporters around 12:30 AM. One individual sustained a minor stab wound to the hip and was subsequently hospitalized.

Authorities had previously designated this particular World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco as a “high-risk” event. An intelligence briefing had highlighted the potential for increased tensions due to the match’s eliminatory nature and the significant prize of a semi-final berth, even considering its late 10 PM broadcast slot. Officials had anticipated public gatherings and the potential use of pyrotechnics, regardless of the game’s outcome.
