Psg explores russian market after safonov transfer success

PSG’s Russian connection: how Safonov’s move is shaping summer recruitment

The Paris Saint-Germain’s transfer strategy for summer 2024 took an unexpected turn with the arrival of Matvey Safonov. The Russian goalkeeper, signed for €20 million from Krasnodar, swiftly overtook Lucas Chevalier to claim the starting role. Unless injured, Safonov will line up between the posts when PSG face Arsenal in the Champions League final on 30 May.

Safonov’s seamless adaptation has inspired further exploration of the Russian football market. Under the guidance of sporting director Luis Campos, PSG is now eyeing two additional prospects from the region. The first is Aleksey Batrakov, a 20-year-old attacking midfielder whose 17 goals and 12 assists in 35 league games for Lokomotiv Moscow have drawn attention. Campos recently visited Moscow to initiate talks, according to Batrakov’s agent, Vladimir Kuzmichev.

Two rising stars on Campos’ radar

PSG’s interest extends beyond Batrakov. The club is also monitoring Matvey Kislyak, a 20-year-old midfielder at CSKA Moscow. Kislyak, a Russian international with nine caps, fits Luis Enrique’s tactical approach and could replace Lee Kang-in if the latter departs. With six goals and six assists in 28 league appearances this season, Kislyak’s contract runs until 2029, making him a long-term target.

The Safonov transfer has proven a masterstroke, and PSG is determined to replicate its success by securing promising Russian talent.
