The election of Ousmane Sonko as President of Senegal’s National Assembly marks a sudden reversal of fortunes for the opposition leader. Less than a week after his dismissal as Prime Minister, Sonko has reclaimed a prominent position in the country’s political arena.

Addressing reporters in Dakar, Sonko dismissed concerns about his political future, emphasizing that “removal from office does not equate to political disgrace.” With palpable determination, he framed his new role as an opportunity to strengthen legislative oversight rather than pursue personal vendettas.

In a conciliatory yet firm tone, Sonko outlined his vision for the coming months, promising “strict monitoring of government actions” while avoiding institutional chaos. He reserved the right to deploy “all available checks and balances” should disagreements arise with the executive branch.

A historic power-sharing arrangement

Political analysts describe this arrangement as an unprecedented cohabitation between the legislature and presidency. Ellimane Haby Kane, director of the Legs Africa think tank, notes that while Sonko presents a measured demeanor, his ultimate goal appears to be consolidating control over executive decisions.

The tension between Sonko’s party and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration has already surfaced. Reports indicate that the president’s office reached out to party members regarding government formation without consulting the Pastef party first—a move that Sonko’s team has since criticized as unconstitutional.

A statement released by the Pastef party on Tuesday evening confirmed early discussions with presidential advisors regarding coalition talks, though no formal agreement has been reached. The party has since set conditions for participation in any future government.
