Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko relieved of duties amid rising political tensions
Senegal is bracing for continued political turbulence following the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The decision came swiftly after a heated exchange between the outgoing premier and lawmakers in the National Assembly.
In a dramatic turn, Sonko had vocally criticized the existence of political slush funds during the parliamentary session. This public stance followed weeks of escalating internal strife at the highest levels of government. Just over three weeks prior, President Faye had sought to quell rumors of an institutional crisis in a televised interview with multiple national networks. “He is my Prime Minister. As long as he remains in office, it is because I trust him. The moment that changes, he will be replaced,” the head of state had stated, projecting unwavering confidence.
The very next day, Sonko countered with his own message to supporters, urging them to redouble their commitment while emphasizing that the Pastef party’s ideology transcends personal ambition. He framed the movement as a national project rooted in sacrifice, selflessness, and service to the people.
Days later, President Faye reshuffled his communications team, appointing Me Abdoulaye Tine as presidential spokesperson. Tine, who also leads the coalition’s executive board, replaced Ousseynou Ly, a figure seen as an ally of Sonko. The dismissed official quickly reaffirmed his allegiance to the Pastef vision in a public statement.
“My dedication and loyalty to the transformative project led by Pastef under the leadership of Ousmane Sonko remain unshaken. This initiative, which embodies the hope and ambition of a sovereign, equitable, and prosperous Senegal, continues to guide our every move,” Ly declared.
At the heart of the rift lies a fundamental disagreement over the future of the Diomaye Président coalition. While Sonko advocates for its dissolution, President Faye insists on preserving the alliance, which played a pivotal role in securing the 2024 presidential victory.
This discord unfolds against a backdrop of severe economic strain. Senegal is grappling with sluggish growth, a public debt nearing 132% of GDP, and repeated sovereign credit rating downgrades. Access to international markets has grown increasingly constrained, and negotiations for a fresh arrangement with the International Monetary Fund are ongoing.
The unfolding events signal the gradual unraveling of a political partnership forged over the past decade. Unable to run in the 2024 presidential election, Sonko had backed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the Pastef candidate. Faye went on to win decisively in the first round with over 54% of the vote, defeating former Prime Minister Amadou Ba.
