Senegal politics: supporters of Ousmane Sonko react to dismissal

The dismissal of Senegal’s Prime Minister has reignited political discussions in Dakar. Since the presidential announcement terminating Ousmane Sonko’s tenure, residents of the capital have been grappling with a mix of resignation and disillusionment amid months of friction between the country’s two top leaders.

« Thank goodness. For us, Sonko’s supporters, this was expected. Ousmane Sonko has achieved more than any other minister in Senegal’s history. We will be prouder than ever to stand by his side. Bassirou Diomaye Faye acted immaturely, » shares Ibrahima Dione, a Dakar resident.

The ousting of Sonko and his entire cabinet has yet to elicit a substantial response from the Pastef party, leaving the state’s leadership crisis unaddressed.

« This dismissal is destabilizing. I was caught off guard by the news. The announcement came suddenly. It’s not good for the country. Senegal needs jobs, not political turmoil, » remarks Modou Diaw, another resident of the capital.

Diomaye Faye owes his presidency to Sonko’s widespread popularity, particularly among Senegal’s youth. However, the Prime Minister’s controversial statements reportedly frustrated the Head of State, observers note.

« Many Senegalese saw this coming. The president has the authority to appoint and dismiss officials. If it’s for the nation’s good, then it’s the right move, » states Thierno Sow, a Dakar local.

The Pastef party secured a landslide victory in the March 2024 elections, campaigning on promises of sweeping political change and a fight against public mismanagement.
