Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party, is voicing serious concerns over the appointment of Moussa Sarr as the new Minister of Justice. The decision raises red flags within his political movement, which fears the new Guardian of the Seals could deepen existing judicial tensions.
The newly formed government has barely settled in when the first waves of criticism begin to roll in. And it is the Justice portfolio that has become the epicenter of these reservations.
Sonko argues that Moussa Sarr’s involvement in past legal cases—particularly those that have strained relations between Pastef and certain courts—makes his appointment unsettling for the party. “The selection for the Justice Ministry does not inspire confidence. This individual has been a key player in several sensitive legal matters,” Sonko stated.
While Sonko refrains from issuing a final verdict, his cautious tone does not mask the skepticism within Pastef. “We harbor doubts, but we will assess the situation. Our response will come from the National Assembly,” he warned, hinting at close parliamentary scrutiny of the new minister’s actions.
Al Amine Lô in the crosshairs
Beyond Moussa Sarr’s appointment, Sonko also took aim at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô. Though presented as a technocrat, the Prime Minister is accused of straying into partisan politics rather than focusing on governance. “I urge the Prime Minister to stick to his technocratic role and steer clear of political maneuvering,” Sonko declared.
He went further, suggesting he possesses insider knowledge of certain government initiatives. “I am fully aware of what is happening. Out of courtesy, I have held back, but he should not push his luck,” Sonko cautioned.
Pastef insiders face scrutiny
Sonko’s criticism did not spare members of his own party who joined the government, including Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. He accused them of accepting ministerial positions without consulting party leadership, “Those who are in the government are there on their own accord. Their cases will be addressed in due course,” he asserted.
These remarks signal the first political fissures within the new administration. Yet, it is Moussa Sarr’s appointment to the Justice Ministry that remains the focal point of Sonko’s unease—one he insists will be resolved only through the minister’s actions.
