Senegal dismisses Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially relieved Ousmane Sonko of his duties as Senegal’s Prime Minister and Head of Government. The decision marks a decisive shift in the political landscape of the country.
Ousmane Sonko is no longer Senegal’s Prime Minister and Head of Government. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has formally dismissed him from his position.
This announcement was made live on national television by the Senegalese head of state, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The decision to remove Ousmane Sonko follows a period of strained relations between the two political figures, signaling a major turning point in Senegal’s governance.
With this dismissal comes the termination of all ministerial and secretary of state positions within the government.
Ousmane Sonko responded to his removal on his social media platforms, stating: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully in Keur Gorgui.”
The removal of Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister also results in the dissolution of the Republic’s government. The Presidency has confirmed that a new Prime Minister will be appointed and a new government formed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s rise to power in 2024 was significantly influenced by Ousmane Sonko. After being barred from running as a candidate, Ousmane Sonko endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who ultimately won the election in a single round with over 54% of the vote.
