Senegal’s koulibaly injury: a growing concern for world cup aspirations

The prolonged absence of Senegal’s defensive stalwart and captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, who plays for Al-Hilal, due to a thigh injury, is raising significant alarm with the FIFA World Cup less than two months away.

In Senegal, the lack of their key central defender and national team leader, Kalidou Koulibaly (34 years old, 102 caps, 2 goals), is becoming increasingly worrying. He has not played any minutes for his Saudi Pro League club, Al-Hilal, since April 8th.

Having sustained a thigh injury during a training session, the former Napoli star’s return date to the pitch remains unknown. This uncertainty comes just over six weeks before the World Cup, where the Lions of Teranga are scheduled to compete in Group I against France, Norway, and Iraq.

Al-Hilal offers no definite timeline

During his most recent press conference, Al-Hilal’s coach, Simone Inzaghi, adopted a cautious approach. He stated, « We have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom is back and naturally ready. As for Koulibaly, he suffered a thigh contusion which caused a hematoma. We are monitoring his condition daily, and his return will be determined based on his response to treatment in the coming days. »

The Saudi club further clarified, « Kalidou Koulibaly has been undergoing his rehabilitation program at the Meena clinic, located at the club’s headquarters. This follows medical examinations conducted in Spain, which indicated a need for additional treatment sessions for his injury in the anterior thigh muscle. » With only six league matches left for Al-Hilal, the situation surrounding Koulibaly’s fitness remains ambiguous. Having already missed the Africa Cup of Nations final and the March friendly matches against Peru (2-0) and Gambia (3-1), a crucial question looms: will Kalidou Koulibaly play again before the World Cup?
