During Friday’s official handover ceremony at the Primature, outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko handed over the reins to his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, marking the start of a new chapter in Senegal’s governance.
Shared history and mutual respect mark the transition
The ceremony was not just a formal transfer of duties but a moment of reflection on the collaborative journey between the two leaders. Al Aminou Lô, who was appointed in April 2024, shared how his working relationship with Sonko began—unexpectedly. “He reached out to me without knowing me. I came, and he trusted me,” he recounted, highlighting the foundation of their partnership under the National Transformation Agenda.
His integration into the executive was swift. “The President called me to his side to implement the National Transformation Agenda under his guidance, and the results speak for themselves,” he noted, emphasizing the significance of that collaboration. Sonko, in turn, had entrusted him with a critical role: “He asked me to remain the bridge between the Primature and the Presidency for the National Transformation Agenda—a responsibility I carried out faithfully.”
Lessons and warnings for the road ahead
Al Aminou Lô also revealed that Sonko had forewarned him about the challenges awaiting the new administration. “He made it clear just days ago: it’s going to be extremely tough,” he stated. Despite the difficulties ahead, the incoming Prime Minister expressed his intention to maintain open channels with his predecessor. “I will continue to seek his wise counsel whenever needed,” he affirmed.
Reflecting on the human dimension of the transition, Al Aminou Lô described the moment as one of deep gratitude. “It’s an honor to take on this role alongside someone who has shown such generosity in supporting this nation’s progress,” he said, acknowledging Sonko’s supportive stance during the handover.
Commitment to continuity and collaboration
The handover was more than a procedural formality—it was a testament to institutional stability. Both leaders underscored the importance of continuity in governance, with Al Aminou Lô committing to uphold the initiatives set in motion under Sonko’s tenure. “We will build on the foundation laid so far,” he declared, signaling a smooth transition despite the hurdles.
