Senegal’s political future hinges on dialogue and consensus says Amadou Ba

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Amadou Ba

In a landmark meeting at the Presidential Palace, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba emphasized the urgent need for constructive dialogue and consensus-building to navigate Senegal’s current political and economic challenges.

During a consultation session with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, part of the ongoing National Dialogue initiative, Ba underscored the significance of these discussions for the nation’s stability. He described the initiative as a critical step toward addressing pressing national issues through inclusive conversations.

Key topics discussed in the meeting

The former head of government engaged in detailed exchanges with the President on several critical fronts, including:

  • Political reforms and institutional changes aimed at strengthening governance
  • The ongoing electoral reform process and the need for broader consensus
  • Economic challenges exacerbated by global and regional uncertainties
  • Security concerns amid evolving sub-regional dynamics

Economic credibility and financial stability under scrutiny

As a former Finance Minister, Ba shared firsthand insights into Senegal’s economic landscape, highlighting concerns over recent credit rating downgrades. These downgrades, he noted, have significantly increased the cost of borrowing, limiting the government’s fiscal flexibility.

He also drew attention to Senegal’s prolonged absence of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) financing program. During his tenure, Ba recalled, the country went six years without IMF disbursements, yet maintained its financial credibility. However, the current economic climate demands strategic compromises to secure essential funding for development projects.

Security and regional cooperation

The discussions extended to regional security challenges, particularly in light of recent geopolitical shifts. Ba stressed the importance of enhanced dialogue and robust support for national defense and security forces to counter emerging threats.

A call for unity beyond political divides

Despite his opposition stance, Ba reiterated his commitment to national interests. He called for a calm, collaborative approach to tackle shared challenges, asserting that some issues transcend political affiliations.

« I remain in the opposition, and I will continue to do so, » Ba stated. « But there are questions that go beyond party lines. We must work together peacefully and constructively for the greater good of Senegal. »
