Senegal’s presidential coalition condemns Ousmane Sonko’s mbacké remarks

The Diomaye Président coalition has strongly denounced recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Mbacké. Leaders within the coalition criticized these remarks, perceiving them as insulting towards the Head of State and a departure from the sense of responsibility expected from a senior institutional figure.

Bassirou Dieng, a prominent member of the coalition, emphasized that such utterances are entirely inconsistent with the foundational principles of a rule of law state. «Within a rule of law state, a self-respecting democracy, or a Republic, it is utterly unacceptable for a President of the National Assembly to engage in certain injurious remarks directed at the Head of State,» he stated.

He further noted that Ousmane Sonko’s declarations have triggered widespread responses across social media platforms and traditional news outlets. «Since his appearance yesterday in Mbacké, there has been a significant stir across social networks and media. Virtually no one agrees with his statements. Everyone is condemning Ousmane Sonko’s scandalous remarks,» he asserted, urging the individual in question to exercise greater prudence.

Dieng also issued a warning, indicating that the presidential coalition intends to adopt a more resolute stance against what it perceives as persistent assaults on state institutions. «The Diomaye Président coalition, for its part, will confront this. Moving forward, it will no longer be acceptable to overlook certain insulting comments by Ousmane Sonko directed at His Excellency the President of the Republic, nor at other authorities who embody the State,» he affirmed.

This strong reaction from the ruling majority follows Ousmane Sonko’s public appearance in Mbacké, where his pronouncements ignited considerable political debate and provoked sharp criticism within the presidential camp.
