Government accountability under scrutiny in Dakar
Dakar — This Thursday, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko will lead his entire cabinet before Senegalese lawmakers for the obligatory quarterly Questions to the Government session. This constitutional exercise, rooted in Article 104 of the National Assembly’s internal rules, serves as a cornerstone for public accountability and governance oversight.
The session, scheduled for 202 minutes, will address 14 key questions. A significant portion—10 questions—has been allocated to the ruling Pastef-Les Patriotes parliamentary group, while 2 questions each go to the opposition Takku Wallu group and independent deputies. The format underscores the balance of power within the Assembly while ensuring diverse representation in the oversight process.
The proceedings will be chaired by Ismaëla Diallo, First Vice-President of the National Assembly, reinforcing the structured nature of this democratic accountability mechanism. This marks the fifth such session since Prime Minister Sonko’s appointment, highlighting the government’s commitment to regular parliamentary engagement.
The Questions to the Government initiative is designed to foster transparency, allowing lawmakers to probe policy decisions, challenges, and strategic priorities directly with the executive branch. By providing a platform for direct dialogue, the sessions aim to bridge the gap between governance and citizen representation.
