The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has once again underscored the government’s commitment to tightening legislation concerning homosexuality, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of existing laws. In the face of mounting international criticism, he has taken a firm stand against external interference, reaffirming Senegal’s sovereignty on this deeply sensitive issue.

Speaking at a high-level briefing, Sonko made it clear that no individual, regardless of status or influence, will be spared from the law’s reach. He stated, « There will be no protection for the powerful, as they are often the root of the problem. Laws are universal and must be applied without exception. » His remarks reflect a broader government strategy aimed at addressing societal concerns while resisting external pressures.
Addressing the historical context, Sonko argued that previous administrations failed to take decisive action, allowing the issue to escalate. He noted, « This problem is not new, and past regimes did not act as we are doing now. Had they intervened earlier, the situation would not have reached such a critical point. »
The Prime Minister also addressed international backlash, particularly from Western partners, stating emphatically that Senegalese citizens overwhelmingly support the government’s position. He asserted, « Criticism is coming only from outside our borders, especially from certain Western nations. We reject any attempt to dictate our laws or values. » Sonko dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, adding, « Even some African intellectuals seek to interfere, but there will be no delays in enforcing the law. »
