Sonko meets Dakar archbishop ahead of popenguine 2026 pilgrimage

Prime Minister reinforces national unity in pre-pilgrimage dialogue with religious leaders

With the 138th annual Popenguine Marian Pilgrimage approaching, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid a courtesy visit to the Notre-Dame des Victoires Cathedral in Dakar. The high-level meeting, held in a warm and respectful atmosphere, brought together key representatives to discuss social cohesion and interfaith harmony ahead of the nation’s largest religious gathering.

During the meeting, Monseigneur André Guèye, the Archbishop of Dakar, warmly received the Prime Minister, joined by government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye and parliamentarian Béatrice Germaine Faye. The discussions centered on reinforcing social peace, fostering national unity, and strengthening dialogue between religious communities—all critical themes in the lead-up to the Popenguine event.

The Prime Minister underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to Senegal’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and shared values. He highlighted the indispensable role of religious institutions in safeguarding social stability and national cohesion. In response, Monseigneur Guèye expressed gratitude for the visit and offered prayers for continued peace, national harmony, and the success of initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s development.

This strategic meeting reflects the growing emphasis on collaboration between political and religious leaders in Senegal, particularly as the nation prepares for one of Africa’s most significant religious events—the Popenguine Marian Pilgrimage.
