Sonko urges update of municipal emergency plans to combat floods

During the Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko emphasized the urgent need to strengthen flood prevention and management strategies across the country. His remarks underscored the collaborative efforts already underway by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, alongside other state agencies, to mitigate risks before the rainy season intensifies.

The head of government highlighted key preparatory actions, including the clearing of drainage networks, inspection of flood-control infrastructure, pre-positioning of pumping equipment, and the development of emergency response plans. Stressing the cross-sectoral nature of flood resilience, he directed all relevant ministries—coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with support from the Ministry of the Interior for civil protection and crisis management—to align their efforts seamlessly.

Sonko issued clear directives to ensure immediate implementation of critical measures. These include updating and validating municipal emergency plans without delay, verifying the functionality of early warning systems and communication channels with communities, deploying intervention resources in high-risk zones, and conducting a nationwide interministerial simulation exercise before June 15, 2026.

By calling for these actions, the Prime Minister reinforced the government’s commitment to proactive disaster preparedness. The measures aim to reduce vulnerabilities in urban and rural areas, ensuring timely responses to potential flooding events. Officials have been tasked with finalizing all operational protocols to safeguard lives, property, and infrastructure during the upcoming rainy season.
