The Republic of Chad has made a significant stride in climate action by earning eligibility for the Building Climate Resilience of Urban Populations (BCRUP) program under the United Nations Green Climate Fund (GCF). This milestone, announced during the World Urban Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan, elevates Chad to the 11th eligible country for the initiative, expanding its reach beyond the initial ten nations.
This achievement underscores Chad’s commitment to addressing pressing urban challenges exacerbated by climate change. Heavy flooding, mass displacement, and environmental disruptions in major cities like N’Djamena have prompted urgent action, and international recognition has now validated these efforts.
Strategic partnerships and immediate funding opportunities
During the forum, Chad’s delegation, led by Minister Mahamat Assileck Halata, engaged in high-level discussions with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. The meetings focused on urban resilience strategies and future collaboration frameworks. Following these talks, a pilot project secured preliminary funding of $900,000 to $1 million, setting the stage for additional financial support from UN-Habitat in the coming months.
