The President of Chad, His Excellency Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, reaffirmed his commitment to developing the country’s horse racing industry during the Grand Prix de la République held at the Afrouk racetrack on the outskirts of N’Djamena.
Addressing a crowd of thousands—including breeders, riders, and enthusiasts—the Head of State observed the races before unveiling a substantial financial boost to strengthen this sector, long regarded as a cherished sporting and cultural legacy of Chad.
The announcement was delivered by Aziz Mahamat Saleh, Minister of State and Director of the Presidential Cabinet, who confirmed a 50 million CFA franc allocation to advance horse racing competitions and enhance the national equine breed.
« The President is determined to support the advancement of Chad’s horse racing and the enhancement of our equine breeds », he stated to a captivated audience.

The initiative was warmly welcomed by the Association of Breeders and Actors in Chad’s Horse Racing (AEARCT), a pioneering organization established in 1963 in what was then known as Fort-Lamy—today’s N’Djamena. Widely recognized as the nation’s first public utility association, AEARCT has played a unifying role in bringing together individuals from all walks of Chad’s diverse society for over six decades.
In his address, Idriss Ahmed Idriss, President of AEARCT, emphasized the association’s historic significance, describing it as « a true melting pot of Chadian unity ». He also highlighted the deep-rooted connection between the country’s highest authorities and the equestrian world, noting that former President Ngarta Tombalbaye frequently hosted races during state visits, while Idriss Déby Itno personally followed televised competitions.
The association leader reserved special praise for the ongoing construction of the new Afrouk racetrack, officially named Hippodrome Hassan Guihini Khamis. He described the project as the most transformative step ever taken to promote horse racing in Chad, as prior events were held at the old N’Djamena racetrack or temporary venues.

« You are the first Head of State to inaugurate a facility designed not only for horse racing and equestrian sports but also to house AEARCT’s administration and a dedicated equestrian village », he declared to thunderous applause.
AEARCT’s leadership also urged the establishment of sustainable funding mechanisms, inspired by pari-mutuel systems used in other nations, to ensure the long-term viability of the horse racing sector.
Beyond its sporting significance, horseback riding holds deep cultural and social importance across Chad, where horses are integral to traditions, livestock farming, and daily life. The President’s attendance and the new financial pledge are seen as a clear endorsement of modernization and professionalization within the national equine industry.
