Talk about making a statement! The Bénin national U20 women’s team, affectionately known as the Amazones, pulled off a fantastic 1-1 draw on Saturday while visiting Côte d’Ivoire. This result against the formidable Éléphantes gives them a really strong position heading into their home leg.
an intense showdown in Abidjan
The highly anticipated clash between Côte d’Ivoire’s and Bénin’s rising female football stars certainly delivered. It was a fiercely physical match, full of non-stop effort from both sides, as they essentially cancelled each other out in the first leg of these crucial qualifiers.
Right from kick-off, the Ivorian team, boosted by their home crowd, tried to take control. But the Amazones U20 showed incredible tactical discipline and resilience. Even after the home side managed to score first, the young Béninoises absolutely refused to give up.
showing real grit
With an impressive display of mental toughness, the Amazones fought back with serious determination to level the score. Bagging an away goal like that is super valuable in knockout tournaments – it often turns out to be the golden ticket to the next round.
The 1-1 final score really shows how evenly matched these two teams were. Still, the Béninois technical staff’s squad can feel pretty good about themselves, knowing they managed to avoid defeat in Abidjan and potentially did the hardest part of the job already.
all eyes on the home leg in Bénin
So, it all comes down to the home game now! Thanks to this draw, the Amazones U20 are in a fantastic position. A goalless draw (0-0) or, even better, a win in the return match would be enough to send Bénin straight through to the next stage.
“The girls really showed their heart out there,” shared someone close to the technical staff. “Coming back to equalize in Abidjan is no small feat. Now, we just need to stay focused and finish the job in front of our own fans.”
The stage is set for the return match, and we’re expecting a huge turnout from the Béninois public to cheer on their warriors and push them all the way to a final victory!
