Togo’s president urges strategic europe-africa partnership at FII PRIORITY Europe summit

President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo addressed global leaders at the FII PRIORITY Europe summit on June 18, 2026, focusing on critical economic transformations reshaping Europe-Africa relations.

The high-level event, centered on reindustrialization, supply chain resilience, and the impact of artificial intelligence on labor, provided a platform for the Togolese leader to advocate for a fundamental shift in continental cooperation.

Beyond aid: forging equitable and forward-looking partnerships

In his keynote speech, President Gnassingbé emphasized that the traditional models of aid and one-sided cooperation no longer align with today’s geopolitical and economic realities. He argued that Europe and Africa face parallel challenges that demand a more strategic and interdependent approach.

« The time has come to move beyond outdated paradigms of assistance. What we need is a balanced, mutually beneficial partnership rooted in shared interests and productive investment, » he declared.

Strategic autonomy through balanced interdependence

The Togolese President framed strategic autonomy not as isolationism, but as a smarter, more deliberate organization of economic relations. He highlighted how recent global crises have exposed vulnerabilities in over-reliance on distant supply chains, urging a rethink toward more predictable and resilient interconnections.

« True autonomy comes from mastered interdependence—not from cutting ties, but from strengthening them on fairer terms, » he added.

A mutually reinforcing euro-african partnership

Gnassingbé underscored the complementary strengths of both continents. While Europe seeks reliable partners to secure supply chains and enhance competitiveness, Africa requires capital, technology, and infrastructure to accelerate its economic transformation. He sees these needs as complementary, not conflicting.

« These aspirations are not in opposition—they can reinforce each other and create a win-win dynamic for both continents, » he stated.

Togo’s ambition as a west african logistics hub

Speaking on national priorities, the President reaffirmed Togo’s goal of becoming a leading logistics, industrial, and commercial hub in West Africa. This vision hinges on several pillars:

  • Modernization of the Port of Lomé;
  • Development of regional corridors;
  • Streamlined trade facilitation;
  • Digitalization of administrative processes.

These initiatives, he noted, are designed to strengthen not only Togo’s economy but also the resilience of the entire subregion.

From raw materials to value creation: Africa’s industrial leap

The Togolese leader called for Africa to transition from its historical role as a supplier of raw materials to a center of production, transformation, and innovation. He stressed that a more industrialized and integrated Africa would not only benefit its own citizens but also offer significant opportunities for European and global investors.

Togo steps into the global spotlight

The participation of Togo in the FII PRIORITY Europe summit reflects a broader strategy to enhance the country’s visibility among international investors. By showcasing its logistical, industrial, and financial capabilities, Lomé aims to attract new investments, forge strategic partnerships, and solidify its position as a key economic gateway in West Africa.

The summit brought together top-tier global figures, including Yasir ben Othman Al-Rumayyan, Chair of the Board of the Future Investment Initiative Institute, and Richard Attias, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Institute, alongside heads of state, investors, and international financial leaders.
