Tottenham’s fight for survival: de Zerbi urges focus ahead of Chelsea clash

Tottenham’s Premier League survival fight enters decisive phase against Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has delivered a stark warning to his players, insisting the club’s Premier League survival is far from guaranteed ahead of Wednesday’s high-stakes London derby against Chelsea.

Despite sitting in a relatively comfortable position above the relegation zone, De Zerbi has refused to relax, emphasizing that every point remains critical in securing their top-flight status. With the season reaching its climax, the Italian coach made it clear that complacency is not an option.

The mathematical advantage doesn’t guarantee safety

Tottenham currently hold a two-point lead over West Ham United, with a superior goal difference and one game in hand. Theoretically, a single point against Chelsea would mathematically secure their Premier League status. Yet De Zerbi remains cautious, reminding everyone that football’s unpredictability demands constant vigilance.

« We cannot forget where we were a month ago. We are not saved yet. I won’t answer your questions now — before that, we must earn at least one point in the Premier League. We must fight, play well, and stay focused. Only then can we discuss the situation properly,» he stated firmly.

Goalkeeper dilemma adds to Spurs’ tactical challenges

One of De Zerbi’s biggest decisions ahead of the Stamford Bridge showdown involves his starting goalkeeper. While first-choice Guglielmo Vicario has returned from a hernia operation, his recovery timeline remains a factor in the selection process. In his absence, young Czech goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky has impressed, creating a tough call for the manager.

When asked about the situation, De Zerbi kept his cards close to his chest: « Vicario is fit. I’ll decide tomorrow. It’s not difficult — it’s straightforward. Yes, Vicario is our number one, but we must consider fitness, momentum, and other factors. I have an excellent relationship with both players, and whatever happens, it will go smoothly,» he explained.

James Maddison nears return as Spurs battle injuries

Tottenham will be without striker Dominic Solanke, sidelined with a hamstring injury. However, midfield maestro James Maddison is edging closer to full fitness after making a strong return to action following over a year out. Though he showed minor physical concerns early in the week, his recent training progress suggests he could feature against Chelsea.

De Zerbi commented: « Earlier this week, James missed training due to a minor issue, but he trained well yesterday and today. He’s not yet ready for 90 minutes, so we’ll discuss his role tomorrow.»

The manager also praised captain Cristian Romero, who is closing in on a return to action after a prolonged absence. « He’s a great player and an even better person. Since I arrived, he’s been an outstanding captain, even when he wasn’t playing,» De Zerbi added.

Chelsea away day remains a daunting prospect

Statistics paint a grim picture for Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, where they’ve managed just one win in their last 35 league visits. The hostile atmosphere and the quality of Chelsea’s squad make this fixture one of the toughest in the calendar — a reality De Zerbi acknowledged in his pre-match comments.

« Stamford Bridge is a tough place to play. It’s a formidable stadium because Chelsea have been fantastic for the past 25 to 30 years. But tomorrow is a new game,» he concluded.
